What is Elizabeth City, NC, famous for?
Elizabeth City, NC, is famous for the Great Dismal Swamp, which is about a half-hour north of town. Now a National Wildlife Refuge with camping, hiking, and boating on Lake Drummond, this marshy region between Elizabeth City and Virginia Beach once featured a waterway expected to bring prosperity to both towns. The 22-mile Great Dismal Swamp Canal was dug by hand over 12 years, mostly through slave labor.
The canal was completed in 1805 so timber felled in the swamp could be shipped to sawmills. By 1828, the canal averaged 40 feet across and could accommodate larger boats. It never became the total transportation path its creators envisioned. The opening of a new canal to the west in 1859 spelled the end of the Great Dismal Swamp Canal. The federal government added it to the country’s new Intracoastal Waterway in 1928.
